Whole wheat buttermilk waffles

Is there anything better than waking up to fresh waffles on a Sunday morning?


Whole wheat buttermilk waffles are great to make for the family or just yourself. They freeze well, so you can make a batch and enjoy it for weeks. I managed to sneak in a few healthy ingredients. The whole wheat flour adds a bit of fiber and the buttermilk will benefit your gut health because it is rich in probiotics. Eggs are also a nutrition powerhouse and nothing to be afraid of. They are loaded with vitamin D, choline, and biotin. How awesome is it to eat delicious food and do something good for your body!?


I love to top my waffles with some greek yogurt and fresh fruit but you can top them with whatever comes to mind. Bananas and peanut putter, maple syrup, butter, or try a savory version with avocado and egg!


Here’s what you will need to make the waffles



Dry ingredients:⁣⁣

  • 1 ½ cup whole wheat flour⁣⁣
  • 2 tsp baking powder⁣⁣
  • ½ tsp baking soda⁣⁣
  • pinch of salt⁣⁣
  • 2 tbsp sugar⁣⁣
    ⁣⁣
Wet ingredients:

  • ½ cup melted butter⁣⁣
  • 2 large eggs⁣⁣
  • 1 ½ cup buttermilk⁣⁣
  • 2 tbsp vanilla⁣⁣


Directions:


  1. Mix all dry ingredients in one bowl
  2. In another bowl, whisk together all wet ingredients
  3. Now pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix just enough to combine. Make sure you don't over-stir the batter. This will make the waffles less fluffy.
  4. Now pour about ¼ of a cup of batter at a time on your waffle iron and let cook until done.
  5. Serve with favorite toppings.

Food is amazing and supports health. However, food alone can't treat a single disease and prevention is also complicated because genetics play a huge role. Using this mantra pushes all responsibility on the consumer and away from the systems that are in place, preventing us from reaching optimal health. It's a sedative that satisfies a few, leaves many where they are now, and takes away responsibility from policy makers to propose a true reform that would actually benefit the public's health. It should never be food/lifestyle OR medicine.
